Spellbound

This week has been fucking exhausting. He'd been consuling all week and dealing with a threat over in Norway. Somebody trying to brew mind control potions, again. Why couldn't everybody just get along and stop fussing? He's finally back home, in England, heading up the wizarding council while they go over worldwide news, and he gets an invite - no, it isn't that. It's more of a demand, from King Pendragon.

He's a bit tired, really, and didn't feel like dealing with it. "Not now, thank you. Politely decline, for me?" He told the runner. "Send him some magical candy."

He just wanted to go home and finish his book, thank you. He didn't ask for these powers, but if he took a holiday the world would flip out. People held him in high regard for some reason - he wasn't that wise, or old. He was just a young man trying to do right. Yet somehow the King was demanding his presence.

"I can give you a protection charm for that," Merlin laughs. "Maybe that should be the first step. Publicize the fact that you're protected by magic."

[royalpratness]

"That's a really good idea." Arthur looks impressed with Merlin and nods. "Let's do it."

[ayoungboy]

"Maybe...yes, a charm. I could do a tether, but a charm would be better." Merlin muses, smiling gently at Arthur's approval.

[royalpratness]

"What's a tether?" Arthur finishes his wine and looks around the room, pleased to see that all the servants have left.

[ayoungboy]

"Where I tether you to me." Merlin explains. "Use my life force to shield you. But I can just infuse that with a charm, if you'd rather."

[royalpratness]

"That sounds very... personal." Arthur wouldn't feel comfortable knowing that Merlin might put himself in danger for his sake. "I'm sure a charm will be fine."

[ayoungboy]

"Oh, no. I mean. It's alright with me." Merlin says gently. He's going to be tying his life force to the charm anyway. "Do you want a tether to you instead of the charm?"

[royalpratness]

"I don't mind either way but.. how does it work? Does it hurt?" Arthur asks warily, looking slightly uncomfortable about the prospect of being the 'target' of a spell.

[ayoungboy]

"It's more foolproof. A charm can be lost, stolen, or removed. A tether can't." Although...if someone with the right magic figured out how to trace him...but then, Merlin could just put up an extra shielding charm...

"Well...it shouldn't, no. Just a tingly sort of - I mean, it will leave a mark." Merlin explained. "On both of us."

"Depends on the tether. Could be anything." Merlin smiles. "It'll probably be a dragon, though."

"A dragon sounds good. Goes well with my last name."

Merlin laughs again, nodding. "I suppose it does. I'm a dragonlord, so...it makes sense." His symbol in nature, imprinting onto Arthur.

"A dragonlord?" Arthur had heard rumours about dragons but he never really believed they were true.

"Yes. I can speak to and command dragons."

"That's...impressive." Arthur admits, tilting his head. "How many dragons are there? I mean, I've heard reports of people claiming that they exist but they must be pretty well hidden."

[ayoungboy]

"They are. I...shouldn't really speak of it."

[royalpratness]

"Another thing that needs to be kept secret?" Arthur frowns but nods eventually. "I understand. People might get stupid ideas and start a dragon hunt." That would be a disaster.

[ayoungboy]

"The magic I'm telling you about is not low-level stuff." Merlin says quietly. "Dragon magic is old and powerful. Hunting them is a supremely awful idea."

[royalpratness]

"Which is why their existence must be kept secret." Arthur nods, understanding where Merlin is coming from.

[ayoungboy]

"Unless you'd like them ravaging your kingdom." Merlin nods pensively. The dragons would not sit idly by and be hunted, few as they already were.

[royalpratness]

"Not really. How many dragonlords are there?" Considering that he had started out thinking that Merlin was nothing but a phoney with a few tricks up his sleeve, he finds the man to be increasingly fascinating.

[ayoungboy]

"Just, ah...me." Merlin smiles wryly. "It's a bloodline. When my father died, it was passed down to me."

[royalpratness]

"Oh." That wasn't what Arthur had expected. "So if you don't have any children, that bloodline will die out." His lips quirk up into a smile. "Sounds like we got that in common."

Merlin laughs, nodding. "I suppose we do."
